BFDP’s Strengthening Families/Strengthening Community project provides Know Your Rights workshops and community forums  to inform parents of their legal rights and responsibilities as parents. Forums are held at churches, preventive service agencies, mental health facilities, and substance abuse programs that serve parents who have children in foster care or at risk of foster care placement.  and explain how the child welfare system enters families’ lives and discuss the responsive measures parents can take to keep their children safe without unnecessary child welfare involvement. The project helps families dealing with the child welfare system before a family court case is filed by providing advice about child welfare and benefits, referral to needed services, and direct assistance, such as attending child safety conferences held to determine whether children should be removed.

BFDP developed a Know Your Rights brochure designed to explain to parents their legal rights and responsibilities.
